The “shoulder season” for Cape Cod and the surrounding islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard is a great time to visit for some amazing festivals and events. Most of these events have been happening for many years and are rich in tradition. The weather is cooler, there are less crowds and the prices have dropped, however the fun has not stopped! There are all types of fall festivals including oyster contests, beer and wine festivals, music and so much more. Cape Cod delivers a New England experience unlike any other.

This “shoulder season” we chose the festivals and events below as some of our favorites! They each have a different New England experience and are unique to the Cape. All are worth the trip!

Our Favorite “Shoulder Season” Festivals & Events

Shuck! A Day of Oysters & Beer! (Hyannis | October)

Join Shuck! This October will be the 7th year this event has run. Partnered with Cape Cod Beer this fun event features lots of local oysters for you to sample, as well as, live music and other delicious seafood to enjoy! It is a great way to support local farmers and brewers and to learn about some of the oyster culture on the Cape. You can even pair your craft beers with the oysters!

Tennessee Williams Theater Festival (Provincetown | September)

This must-visit event takes place in Provincetown. A beautiful waterfront location that is rich in history of art and culture. Besides the beautiful location, you will want to attend this event to see the diverse play performances and maybe even attend a workshop. This is a great event if you are a fan of Tennessee Williams or just want to support the arts.

Love Live Local Fest (Hyannis | September & December)

Love Live Local Fests are events where people gather to show their support for the local business community. These events are free. They usually feature the work of over 70 local Cape Cod artisans, artists, farmers etc. The Fests also offer local entertainment and opportunities to connect with the community.

Wellfleet Oyster Fest (Wellfleet | October)

This fun annual event is for oyster lovers! Although there are many culinary delicacies at this event. You will sample world-class oysters here and have the opportunity to watch skilled shuckers compete doing their thing! There is also lots of local beer and wine to sample, artisan vendors and live entertainment.

Nantucket Christmas Stroll (Nantucket | December)

This is not on the Cape, but it is an iconic event that is worth the ferry ride! Come and see hundreds of decorated seven-foot Christmas trees line the downtown streets. They are illuminated during a public ceremony with caroling at dusk the day after Thanksgiving. There is also a variety of live outdoor music, as well as, holiday refreshments offered by store owners and much more!

Cape Cod Brew Festival (Falmouth | September)

Beer lovers unite! The annual Cape Cod Brew Fest is typically in September at the Cape Cod Fairgrounds. This celebration includes American craft brewers and samples from 40+ breweries and over 100 styles of beer. There are also many more vendors, food trucks, live music and of course a beautiful relaxed atmosphere to enjoy. It’s a great way to celebrate the end of summer and give back to charitable causes in the process!

Oktoberfest (Chatham | October)

This fun event infuses German tradition with New England scenery. You will have an authentic experience with bratwurst, pretzels and other tasty Bavarian delights. This festival also features live entertainment, kid-friendly activities and lots of craft and local beers.

Yarmouth Seaside Festival (Yarmouth | October)

This festival includes artisans and food vendors, a road race, canoe and kayak race, Family Chalk Fest, Sand Sculpture Contest and kids activities including — special shows, crafts, games, rides, live music and kids’ entertainment. You won’t want to miss this fun event!
